SuperPower, Inc. Announces Coated Conductor Performance Achievements and Follow-On Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with Los Alamos National Laboratory

  • Three-year LNAL CRADA Milestones Successfully Concluded
  • Follow-On Two-Year CRADA Executed with LANL

Washington, DC - In a presentation made at the U.S. Department of Energy Peer Review held in Washington D.C., July 23 - 25, 2003, SuperPower announced that it has progressed on its goal to reproducibly achieve more than 100 A-m over 10 meter long coated ocnductors produced in its pilot manufacturing facility in Schenectady, New York.

Earlier this year, in a presentation given by Philip J. Pellegrino, president of SuperPower, Inc., at the January 2003 DOE Wire Workshop, SuperPower announced that it had produced its first 10 meter tape with a 1000 A-m performance.  The achievements presented today reviewed progress on this performance.  Included in this demonstration was an 18 meter long tape with a performance of 1980 A-m.

A significant part of this recent achievement is that the 100 A-m performance obtained over 10 meter lengths by using higher tape throughput than that which was used in January 2003.  Mr. Pellegrino said, "This demonstration confirms the viability of our coated conductor processes to reproducibly fabricate 10 meter long tapes with 1000 A-m performance.  We have been working on increasing the tape throughput since the January announcement.  It was important to establish that we could achieve the superior performance even at the higher throughput.  We are continuing to make improvements to our process equipment and the processes themselves to achieve longer lengths at higher tape throughputs as we scale up to manufacturing."

SuperPower also announced the successful completion of the milestones of its first Cooerative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).  Results of this collaboration included establishment of Pilot-scale facilities for coated conductor manufacturing and reproducivle demonstration of meter lengths of coated conductor with performance greater than 100 A-m and the recent demonstration of ten meter lengths of coated conductor with performance greater than 1000.

To continue this successful collaboration, SuperPower and Los Alamos have executed a follow-on two-year CRADA.  This CRADA will continue to focus on establishing processes that are capable of production-scale throughput of second-generation HTS.
