SuperPower, Inc. Announces New Coated Conductor Performance Achievements

St. Petersburg, FL- SuperPower, Inc. announced here today at the U.S. Department of Energy Wire Development Workshop that it produced its first 10 m long second-generation high temperature superconductor (HTS) wire with a performance exceeding 1000 amp-meter. In a presentation given at the U.S. DOE Wire Development Workshop, “Progress in Scaling Up Coated Conductor Fabrication at SuperPower, Inc.”), Philip J. Pellegrino, President of SuperPower, Inc. revealed that a performance of 1060 amp-meter was achieved over its first 10 m long second-generation HTS wire produced in the Pilot Manufacturing facilities at SuperPower. Mr. Pellegrino stated that SuperPower could achieve its publicly announced goal of consistently producing 1000 amp-meter in lengths greater than 10 m well before its initial target of the end of calendar year 2003. This demonstration comes on the heels of the announcement made at the Intermagnetics Annual Shareholder’s meeting in November 2002 that SuperPower had more than tripled its calendar year 2002 milestone by achieving 315 amp-meter in lengths greater than 1 meter. Pellegrino stated that “rapid advancements continued to be made in scale up of second-generation HTS in our pilot manufacturing facilities. This is another major step towards our mid-decade goal of 100,000 amp-meter in kilometer lengths. We are now working towards consistently and reproducibly manufacturing 10 m long HTS tapes with performance exceeding our calendar year 2003 milestone of 1000 amp-meter".

SuperPower is collaborating with Los Alamos and Argonne National Laboratories in efforts to scale up second-generation HTS manufacturing. SuperPower holds exclusive licenses in the relevant process technology with Los Alamos National Laboratory.
