SuperPower, Inc. Delivers 2G HTS Wire to Sumitomo Electric Industries


Schenectady, New York. Today SuperPower, Inc. shipped 9.7 km (over 6 miles) of Second-Generation High-Temperature Superconducting (2G HTS) wire to Sumitomo Electric Industries, in Osaka, Japan. Sumitomo will use this wire to manufacture the world’s first 2G HTS power cable, which will then be installed in 2007 as part of the second phase of the Albany HTS Cable Project. The first phase of the project was energized in July 2006 and has been performing flawlessly since that time.

SuperPower is the Project Manager and the prime contractor for the Albany HTS Cable Project. The other partner in the project is the BOC Group, now a member of Linde AG. BOC designed, engineered and installed the cryogenic refrigeration system for the project. SuperPower initially raised $6 million through the New York State Research and Development Authority (“NYSERDA”), and then nearly another $14 million from the U.S. Department of Energy (“DoE”) to underwrite a large part of the $27 million cost of the project. The remaining costs are shared by the partners.

The wire delivery that occurred today is a watershed event following 20 years of research and development in high temperature superconductivity (HTS), which has been underwritten by U.S. taxpayers to the extent of more than $500 million through the DoE, together with at least an equivalent amount invested by the private sector through companies like SuperPower. At the present time, there is no company in the world other than SuperPower that has the ability to supply 2G HTS wire in long, continuous piece lengths, and with the requisite mechanical and electrical performance required for application to a host of electrical applications. In short, SuperPower is a first mover in this so-called “Enabling Technology” which is expected to revolutionize the manner in which electricity is generated, delivered, and ultimately consumed.

The DoE is directing all future funding support and related continuing research at the National Laboratories to the development of 2G HTS wire, which is expected to exhibit all of the performance parameters that are vital to HTS commercial applications in power cables, motors, generators, electrical transformers, and fault current limiters. Moreover, and essentially important, is the expectation that 2G HTS wire will be a cost-effective replacement for copper by the end of the decade.
