SUPERPOWER INVENTORS RECEIVE 2005 ‘INVENTOR OF THE YEAR’ AWARD

  • Inventors of Matrix-Type Superconducting Fault Current Limiter Are Honored 

Schenectady, NY, February 8, 2005 – Two researchers from Intermagnetics General Corporation’s Energy Technology subsidiary, SuperPower, Inc., today will jointly receive the Eastern New York Intellectual Property Law Association (ENYIPLA) Inventor of the Year Award for 2005 at the annual ENYIPLA meeting in Scotia. Dr. Xing Yuan, senior applications scientist, and Drew W. Hazelton, principal engineer, are being honored for their matrix fault current limiter (MFCL) invention, a device under development at SuperPower which could offer an ingenious and economic solution for safely suppressing power surges on the electric utility grid.

Following his tradition of many years, Senator Hugh T. Farley (R-Niskayuna, District 44) has issued a legislative proclamation honoring Yuan and Hazelton as Inventors of the Year and proclaiming the second week of February as Inventors Week in New York State.

The award recognizes U.S. patent 6,664,875, entitled "Matrix-Type Fault Current Limiter," which employs high temperature superconductors (HTS) in a ‘matrix’ configuration to provide a novel method for fault current limiting. Yuan and Hazelton are the listed co inventors.

Philip J. Pellegrino, president of SuperPower said, "The need for reliable electric power is critical to our nation’s socio-economic well-being, as evidenced by the blackout of August 14, 2003, which resulted in lost business and other economic hardships estimated between $6-10 billion. This matrix-type fault current limiter device, acting as a power "valve," could reduce power surges to levels that can be safely handled by the conventional circuit breakers currently in place on the power grid.

Dr. Xing Yuan is leading the technical design team for the MFCL. Since he joined Intermagnetics in 1996, he has been a key participant at both Intermagnetics and the SuperPower subsidiary in the development of various HTS components and systems. Dr. Yuan has a B.S. in Electronic Engineering from Fudan University, Shanghai, PR China and obtained his Ph.D. in Physics from the University at Albany.

Mr. Drew Hazelton joined Intermagnetics in 1980 and has managed programs in a variety of superconducting components technologies. He has published over 40 papers on topics related to the fabrication and use of superconducting materials. Mr. Hazelton has a B.S. in Materials Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, and an M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Union College in Schenectady.

ENYIPLA is a regional organization of intellectual property attorneys and related intellectual property professionals whose practice is located within a geographical corridor which includes the eastern border of New York State. Each year the group chooses an Inventor of the Year. The criteria for selection are creativity, economic value, the difficulty of the problem, the contribution to the well-being of society as a whole and the status of the invention and the inventor in his/her field.
